LI: To learn how to respond to cyber bullying

WIN:

  • To describe the meaning of cyberbullying.
  • To make links between both form of bullying. 
  • To be sensitive towards others. 
  • To understand where to seek support and advice for bullying and cyberbullying.

Introduction

Explain to students that during the lesson you will be talking about some sensitive topics that may make some people feel a little uncomfortable. You may find it helpful to establish some ground rules at the start of the session. Make sure that students know who the relevant people in the school are that they can talk to if they are worried about any of the topics discussed in today’s lesson.

  • What social media do you use? (record on whiteboards) Ask pupils to think for a minute and count how many social media platforms they use.

  • What is cyberbullying?
  • In what ways do you think cyberbullying can happen?

It’s not always easy to know what’s safe online and what’s not. Let us look at Staying Safe Online rules. It will guide you and help you to keep safe and to know what to do when things go wrong.

Staying Safe Online

1)Don’t post any personal information online – like your address, email address or mobile number.

2)Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself. – Once you’ve put a picture of yourself most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3)Keep your privacy settings as high as possible

4)Never give out your passwords

5)Don’t befriend people you don’t know

6)Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.Speak to your parent or carer about peoples suggesting you do

7)Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are

8)Think carefully about what you say before you post something online

9)Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude

10)If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.

Activity:

We will look at 3 scenarios and you will discuss a solution to each problem and why you chose that solution. 

Scenario 1

You are in a chat room chatting with some people from school. Suddenly, the conversation gets nasty and another person says some hurtful things about your family. What should you do?

Scenario 2

You have received a nasty text message from someone in your class. What could you do to keep yourself safe and get help?

Scenario 3

Your parents have allowed you to get your own social media page. Some people you know from school have posted some nasty comments about your appearance under one of your posted photographs. What should you do?
