Discuss with your adult at home

What is a webcam?

A webcam is a digital video device commonly built into a computer. Webcams can now be found on most phones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers.

What is its purpose?

Its main function is to transmit pictures over the Internet. It is popularly used with instant messaging services and for recording images.

Now that you have learned about a webcam and its purpose, you can think of some advantages and disadvantages regarding webcam. Also consider links to internet safety.

Advantages of using a webcam

  • keep in touch with family/friends
  • Remote learning online (Covid-19)
  • Using video calls between classmates can also make group projects much easier (secondary school)
  • Privacy settings can stop other people from seeing your picture (always get consent before posting a picture of someone online)

PrivoeDisadvantages of using a webcam

  • Hackers can hack your webcam and control it (they can see you)
  • Sometimes when people meet strangers in chat rooms, they may move the conversation in a video chat – this can be dangerous (online predators) and you should consult with your parents.
  • Young children may be tricked into conducting inappropriate activities with or sending inappropriate pictures to strangers.
  • Abusers may threaten to send images, video or copies of conversations to friends or family

General guidance

  • Only use a webcam with people you know
  • Tell your adult immediately if you see anything you are unhappy with.
  • Always ask permission before you

Description of activity

Children will identify the main advantages and disadvantages linked to e-safety by creating a webcam safety poster.
